Learn about storytelling on LoreFrequently Asked Questions
How does unlocking stories work?
+
When you're physically near a story's location, the app lets you unlock it. Once unlocked, that story is yours to replay anytime — even after you leave the area.
How close do I need to be to unlock a story?
+
Most stories unlock when you're within 50-200 metres of the location, depending on the story and setting. The app will show you how close you are.
Is Lore free?
+
Yes. Lore is free to download and use. You get full access to the story map and can unlock stories at no cost.
What kind of stories are on Lore?
+
Everything from true crime and local history to firsthand wilderness adventures, ghost stories, comedic tales, and more. All stories are tied to real places in Alaska and are either told firsthand by the people who lived them or researched and narrated.
Does Lore track my location?
+
Lore uses your location to determine which stories are nearby and to verify when you're close enough to unlock one. We don't store location data beyond what's necessary to provide the service. See our privacy policy for full details.
Are the stories safe to access?
+
All story locations are placed in publicly accessible areas. Stories are reviewed before publication to ensure locations are safe and appropriate. If you ever feel a location is unsafe, you don't have to go there.
Can I listen offline?
+
Once you've unlocked a story, you can replay it anytime. Download stories while connected to wifi to listen later without using mobile data — great for remote areas with limited service.
Is Lore available outside Alaska?
+
We're launching first in Alaska in May 2026. Stories from other regions will become available as we expand.
